FD30 fire doors in Argyll & Bute: what's involved

Our FD30 fire doors service covers all of Argyll & Bute, across postcode districts including G84, PA78 and PA45.

In Argyll & Bute, FD30 doors are the usual choice for escape-route corridors, stairs and kitchen doors where the fire strategy asks for 30 minutes. Each FD30 leaf we supply for Argyll & Bute is sized for the opening, rather than trimmed beyond what its certification allows.

Managing agents, landlords, schools, care providers, businesses and homeowners in Argyll & Bute can all use one team for survey, supply, installation and evidence. We plan work around occupants and hand over a record for every door.

Where are FD30 doors used?

FD30 is the rating most buildings rely on. You will find it on flat entrance doors, doors onto escape corridors and stairs in houses in multiple occupation, kitchen doors in HMOs, and most internal doors on escape routes in offices, schools, surgeries and shops. Where smoke control matters too, the door is specified as FD30S (E30Sa), which adds a smoke seal and a tighter threshold.

The rating your building needs comes from its fire strategy or fire risk assessment, not from the door supplier. If you are unsure whether a door should be FD30 or FD60, we check the drawings, the risk assessment and what is installed now before we price anything. Our FD30 vs FD60 guide explains the difference.

The regulations behind fire doors in Argyll & Bute

In Argyll & Bute, fire doors are specified against Scotland's Technical Handbooks (Section 2: Fire) under the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004, rather than Approved Document B. Duties in non-domestic premises come from the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

England's regulation 10 does not apply in Scotland. We follow the building's fire risk assessment and, where building work needs a warrant, the local authority's requirements.

What happens after you enquire

  1. Measure the opening, check the frame and confirm the rating needed
  2. Order a certified leaf or doorset to size, with matching components
  3. Remove the old door and assess the frame or structural opening
  4. Fix the frame and hang the leaf to the certified gap tolerances
  5. Fit seals, hinges, latch, closer and signage, then test close-and-latch
  6. Seal the frame-to-wall gap, make good and record the evidence

Questions

Do you provide FD30 fire doors across Argyll & Bute?

Yes. We cover all of Argyll & Bute. Surveys and written quotes are free.

How long does it take to fit an FD30 door?

A leaf into a sound frame is often a few hours. A full doorset including frame removal, fixing, sealing and making good is usually half a day to a day per opening, depending on access and the wall construction.

What is the difference between FD30 and FD30S?

FD30S has been tested for smoke control as well as fire. It adds a smoke seal, usually a brush or blade, and needs a tight threshold gap. Flat entrance doors and doors onto protected escape routes are commonly specified as FD30S.
