Getting glazed fire doors right in Tyne and Wear

Whether your building is in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland or a smaller place in Tyne and Wear, we can provide glazed fire doors with the same evidence-led approach.

We check glazed doors in Tyne and Wear for both fire performance and safety glazing before recommending repair or replacement. Schools, offices and care settings in Tyne and Wear often need vision panels, and each one has to use fire-rated glass in a tested system.

Wherever your building is in Tyne and Wear, the fire safety duties come from national rules, and our installation standard is the same.

Safety and visibility

Glass in doors also has to meet safety glazing rules, so the fire-rated glass chosen needs to be suitable for impact as well. For schools and care settings we also consider where the panel sits so that children or wheelchair users can see through it.

Rules and responsibilities in Tyne and Wear

In Tyne and Wear, as elsewhere in England, the starting point is the Fire Safety Order 2005: whoever controls a workplace or the shared parts of a residential block must make sure its fire doors work. When doors are replaced, the Building Regulations and Approved Document B set the standard the new work has to meet.

Blocks above 11 metres have a specific routine under regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022: quarterly checks of communal fire doors and annual best-endeavours checks of flat front doors. If your Tyne and Wear building is a higher-risk building under the Building Safety Act 2022, we confirm the approval route with the Principal Accountable Person before any work is ordered.

Glazed fire doors questions

Do you provide glazed fire doors across Tyne and Wear?

Yes. We cover all of Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland. Surveys and written quotes are free.

Can you add a vision panel to my existing fire door?

Only if the door's certification allows an aperture of that size and position. Most existing doors cannot be modified this way, so a new glazed doorset is usually needed.

Can any toughened glass go in a fire door?

No. Fire doors need fire-rated glass of the type and size covered by the door's test evidence, fitted with the matching beads and seals. Standard toughened glass is not fire resisting.
